Theodor Wegner

Theodor Hubert Wegner (born September 9, 1880 in Emsdetten , † November 15, 1934 in Dortmund ) was a German geologist and paleontologist. He was a professor at the University of Münster .

Wegner received his doctorate in 1905 under Wilhelm von Branca at the University of Berlin (Die Granulatenkreide des western Münsterlandes, Berlin: JF Starcke 1905). He completed his habilitation in Münster in 1907 and became associate professor and director of the Geological-Paleontological Institute in Münster in 1910.

An early Cretaceous plesiosaur he found in 1912 in a clay pit of Gerdemann's brickworks in Gronau was redefined in 2013 by Oliver Hampe in his honor as Gronausaurus wegneri . Two years earlier (1910) Wegner found another marine dinosaur Brancasaurus brancai in the same clay pit , which he named after his teacher Wilhelm von Branca in 1914.

In 1910 he excavated a complete 18,000 year old mammoth skeleton in the clay pit of the Seiler brothers in Ahlen , which is now mounted in the Geomuseum Münster .
