Theodor Wittmaack (* 1817 ; † 1873 ) was a German doctor with neurological interests. After him, the restless legs syndrome is also sometimes called Wittmaack- Ekbom syndrome.

Life

Wittmaack studied with Peter Krukenberg . During the Schleswig-Holstein survey (1848-1851) he worked as a doctor in various hospitals. Later he settled as a general practitioner in Altona .

Wittmaack described three central symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome in his textbook on nervous diseases in 1861 :

  1. A feeling in the legs that is difficult to describe ("a sensation that cannot be further described [...], without any pain, without pulling.")
  2. Restlessness in the limbs ("as if [...] a spirit of restlessness [...] had hit the legs.")
  3. Occurrence when falling asleep ("sometimes towards evening, but especially in bed until falling asleep.")

He named the disease after its most noticeable symptom, the restless legs, as Anxietas tibiarum 'anxiety of the shins' .
