Theodora and Didymus († 304) were Christian martyrs . Their story was recorded by Ambrose of Milan . Her Catholic feast day is April 28th ( Orthodox : April 27th).

life and death

The beautiful Christian Theodora lived in Alexandria . Because of her vow of chastity, she was condemned by the Roman governor Proculus to prostitute herself in a temple of joy . Her admirer, the soldier Didymus, also a Christian, visited Theodora to help her escape. Theodora managed to escape in soldier clothing. Didymus, however, was sentenced to death. Theodora offered her life for Didymos'. In the end, both were beheaded.

Pierre Corneille wrote the tragedy Theodora in 1645 , but moved the event to Antioch . The play was a failure.

Georg Friedrich Handel composed the oratorio Theodora in 1749 . This piece was also a failure.
