Theodore George Henry Strehlow

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theodore "Ted" George Henry Strehlow (born June 6, 1908 in Hermannsburg ; † October 3, 1978 ) was an Australian ethnologist of German descent . He continued the work of his father Carl Strehlow .

Life

As the son of a missionary, Strehlow learned about the Aranda culture from an early age . The children of the tribe were his playmates. He therefore spoke their language. When he was 14 years old, his father died; the family moved to Adelaide . There he studied English . In 1933 elders approached Strehlow with a request to write down their myths, stories and songs and to continue his father's work. From 1936 to 1942 he worked as a protection officer in the Aboriginal settlement area, which earned him criticism from farmers and settlers, but increased the trust of the Aranda. In 1942 Strehlow was drafted into the Australian Army and participated in World War II in the Pacific . Then he returned to Hermannsburg and continued his research.

Estate and Controversy

The collection of his photos, artifacts, studies and work are deposited in the "Strehlow Research Center" in Alice Springs , where they can be viewed.

Strehlow was at the center of a controversy with Aborigines. They accused him of collecting items from secret ceremonies contrary to their customs. There was particular criticism that Strehlow had sold photos of ceremonies to the German magazine Stern in the last year of his life and that the collection was subsequently managed by a woman, Strehlow's widow.
