Theodore Swarts

Theodore Swarts (born May 9, 1839 in Antwerp , † August 31, 1911 in Kortenberg ) was a Belgian chemist.

Life

Swarts, who had visited the Athenaeum in Antwerp, was a student of August Kekulé in Ghent and in 1867 his successor as a university professor in Ghent (associate professor) when Kekulé moved to Bonn. As early as 1858 he was at the University of Ghent as a preparator of the course in general chemistry (and in 1862 repetitor for chemistry at the preparatory school for civil engineers (Genie civile) and from 1865 to 1867 professor at the military school). In 1871 he became a full professor. He was twice dean of the Faculty of Science. In 1903 he retired. He was considered an excellent teacher.

His daughter married his assistant Leo Baekeland in 1889 , with whom she emigrated to the USA. There Baekeland was successful in the photographic industry.

His son Frédéric Swarts was also a chemist.
