Theodoros Spudaios

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Theodoros Spudaios ( f. Around 790) was the anti- patriarch of Jerusalem at the end of the 8th century .

Life

Theodoros came from a wealthy and influential Jerusalem family; his brother was a respected doctor. Theodoros was a monk in the Spudai monastery, which at that time was attached to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher , hence his nickname Spudaios . At the end of the eighties of the 8th century a conflict arose between him and the patriarch Elias II , in which the Islamic rulers supported Theodoros. Elias II was imprisoned and had to go into exile to Persia, where he probably died in 797.

Although installed by the rulers, whom he presented with rich gifts, Theodoros was not recognized as the rightful patriarch, and he too was eventually exiled to Persia. There his track is lost.
