Therona Riesling

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Therona Riesling is a white wine variety that is adapted to the wine growing conditions in South Africa .

The new breed was presented in 1980 by Christiaan Johannes Orffer and dedicated to the former professor at Stellenbosch University , CJ Theron. The first wine made from this variety in South Africa was made by Weltevrede Wine in 1986. It is a cross of an as yet unknown variety and Cape Riesling, which is called the Crouchen variety in South Africa. In South Africa approx. 140 hectares are planted with this variety (status 2001).

The early ripening variety Therona was specially bred for climates with intensive artificial irrigation and the associated necessary rot resistance. These conditions are common in South Africa. The quality of the wines is considered to be high.
