Crouchen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Crouchen is a white wine that comes from the Sud-Ouest wine-growing region in the French Pyrenees . Because of its susceptibility to the fungal disease powdery mildew , it has almost died out in France. The name Crouchen onomatopoeically describes the crisp character of the grape skin.

The vine came to South Australia through emigrants around 1850, where it was widely grown in the Barossa Valley and Clare Valley . It has long been confused with the Sémillon . Since the Sémillon was erroneously called Riesling at that time , the wines from the Clare Valley were therefore called Clare Riesling. It was not until 1976 that the French ampelograph Paul Truel determined the true origin. Today's global population amounts to around 1,500 hectares worldwide.

A study published in 2007 suggests that the Crouchen is genetically closely related to a number of local varieties of the Sud-Ouest region and forms a grape family with them (e.g. Blancard , Claverie , Claverie coulard , Cruchen faux , Cruixen and Graisse ). Crouchen is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
