Claverie (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Claverie is an old white grape variety that is grown in the Sud-Ouest wine-growing region in southwestern France . It is part of Appellations - wines Tursan , otherwise it is but rarely used. In the 19th century, the white wines made from it were also very popular for export. In particular, their susceptibility to powdery mildew led to a dramatic reduction in the area under vines at the beginning of the 20th century. At the end of the 1990s, 23 hectares were raised.

A study published in 2007 suggests that the white Claverie is genetically closely related to the Crouchen varietal family (e.g. Blancard , Claverie coulard , Crouchen , Cruchen faux , Cruixen and Graisse ).

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy white wool with a crimson tinge. The yellowish-green young leaves are still slightly hairy
  • The rounded leaves (see also the article leaf shape ) are large.
  • The grape is large and long, double-shouldered and quite loose. The slightly elliptical berries are medium to large in size. When fully ripe they are golden yellow in color and slightly brownish in color. The berry skin is thin.

The Claverie grape variety ripens around 25 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late internationally for a grape variety. Due to the thin berry skin, the variety is susceptible to powdery mildew and gray mold rot as well as anthracnose .

The fast-growing variety sprouts late and is therefore not at risk of late frost in spring. The grape variety yields poor. Claverie is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.

Synonyms

The Claverie grape variety is also known under the names Chaloussenc (in the Vic-Bilh region), Bouguieu (in the Tursan growing area ) and galia zuria (in the French Basque Country). In addition, the alternative names Chalosse Blanche, Clabarien, Clabérieu, Clabéria, Claverie Blanc and Claverie verte are mentioned.
