THESIS - interdisciplinary network for doctoral candidates and doctoral candidates e. V. is an interdisciplinary association of doctoral students and young scientists in Germany . The association organizes the mutual exchange of experiences and information between its members via mailing lists and local round tables, organizes conferences and seminars and, in addition to its magazine, publishes advice and other publications.

THESIS is one of the founding members of the European umbrella organization for doctoral candidates and doctoral candidates, eurodoc - The European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers - and in 2008 also appointed Karoline Holländer as its president.

The beginnings of THESIS go back to 1991, when a group of mainly external doctoral students met for the first time in the Rhine-Main area in order to exchange ideas about possibilities for a continuous exchange of experiences and mutual support. The association was founded the following year, followed by the official entry in the association register in 1995. Thesis now organizes around 600 members from 70 departments at 150 universities in Germany and abroad in 30 regional and local groups. The group of members gradually expanded to include doctoral students with various funding formats, e.g. B. as employees, doctoral scholars , postdocs and academics who have already earned their doctorate.

activities

A focus of the THESIS work is on the activities of regional and local groups. They organize round tables for (inter) professional and private exchange. PhD-relevant lectures, writing workshops and similar advanced training events are held on their own initiative by the participants or organized with professional seminar leaders. In addition, there are also cultural and leisure activities on a national level, in some cases (sightseeing, sailing trips, hiking tours, sports).

Thesis works supraregionally in various working groups on topics such as university policy , doctoral studies with a university of applied sciences degree, doctoral studies with child (ren), humanities and social sciences or transdisciplinary sciences as well as project management in doctoral studies. For this purpose, subject-specific mailing lists and group meetings are organized, in some cases specialist conferences are held and conference proceedings are published.

According to the statutes, an ordinary general assembly (formerly: delegates' assembly) takes place every year at the annual meeting. The general assembly also elects the board that represents the association in public as well as at scientific-political conferences and hearings.

Representation of interests in university politics

In terms of university policy, the association has in recent years a. the following focal points:

  • Labor and service law for young academics ( junior professorship , relaxation of the "twelve-year clause" in the university framework law ),
  • Redesign of the doctoral phase as part of the Bologna process
  • Improvement of the care situation u. a. through doctoral agreements
  • Social insurance for doctoral students
  • Improvement of the employment conditions in the context of the amendment of the Academic Contract Act 2015/16

PhD survey

In the summer of 2004, THESIS carried out a Germany-wide survey on the social and economic situation and the quality of supervision for doctoral candidates for the first time. Following the example of the thesis survey, the first Europe-wide survey of doctoral students, initiated and carried out by eurodoc , the European umbrella organization for young researchers, in cooperation with the International Center for Higher Education Research (INCHER) at the University of Kassel, went online in winter 2008/2009 .
