The Evangelical Lutheran Thierfeld Church in Thierfeld , Saxony , with its Barbara Chapel, is one of the oldest village churches in Saxony .

History and architecture

The building was originally erected in the 12th century as a Romanesque choir tower church. In the 13th century, in place of an apse, the remains of which were found during excavations in 2006, the Barbarakapelle was added to the east side of the tower. Fresco paintings, possibly made by monks from Grünhain Monastery , adorn the interior of this eastern part of the church. It is probably the most extensive and oldest surviving wall painting cycle in the Ore Mountains.

The church was structurally changed several times in the course of history. The originally medieval tower has a Gothic tower end with a late Gothic roof turret. The nave, which was enlarged several times, was given today's dimensions in 1841.

Restoration of the Barbara Chapel

Barbara Chapel Thierfeld

During a church renovation in 1896, the medieval wall paintings were discovered and exposed on the walls and the vault of the chapel under thick whitewash. The frescoes found were painted over by the decorative painter August Mebert in the “Gothic style”. Over time, these paintings suffered salt and moisture damage, especially in the base area. In addition, the colors used by Mebert darkened, so that restoration investigations were commissioned in 1997. In 2003, an extensive restoration could begin, which was completed in 2007.

The findings showed that figural paintings on all the walls and the vault of the chapel illustrate the “ Heavenly Jerusalem ”; on the north and south walls, the elders and prophets from the Old Testament and apostles from the New Testament are probably depicted between the towers of the heavenly Jerusalem. The vault is painted with stars, the flowers of the sky and the sun in the east. At the top of the groin vault are the symbols of the four evangelists and the lamb of God with a cross banner. Secular rulers are depicted on the east wall.
