life and work

Thümmel studied at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg , received his doctorate there in 1979 and then initially worked in the field of research and technology in industry. In 1985 he changed to the service of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony. Under his leadership, the inventory of bells in Saxony was inventoried and documented. In recognition of this work, he was appointed in 1997 by the Saxon Church as an expert for bells and tower clocks. In 1999 he was elected to the advisory committee for the German bell system.

Thümmel is currently still working as a volunteer bell expert and chairman of the association Freundeskreis Dresdner Synagoge eV He dealt with the history of bell foundries in Saxony and, based on his knowledge, advised church communities on the maintenance and renovation of tower and church bells. He is the author of the work “Bells in Saxony. Sound between heaven and earth ”.

Thümmel also and especially with reference to the view of Jewish communities on the question of the possibility of so-called "swastika bells" - these are bells cast between 1933 and 1939 with a swastika integrated into their decorations - in church towers: "Whether one stands out from Should separate bells that say "Greater German Reich" is questionable, it was called from 1938 on. I consider swastikas to be intolerable. Bells with a swastika in the decoration can only be singled out, but not sanded down. These bells should be kept with distant hints that it was a wrong way back then. "
