Thil Island is a small rocky island off the Ingrid Christensen coast of Princess Elisabeth Land in East Antarctica . It is located 1.5 km northeast of the Jennings Promontory in the eastern section of the Amery Ice Shelf .
The American geographer John Hobbie Roscoe (1919–2007) mapped it using aerial photographs taken by the United States Navy as part of Operation Highjump (1946–1947). Roscoe named the island after Lieutenant René Bernard Thil IV. (1923-1996), a crew member on the reconnaissance flights during this operation in the area of this island.
