Thilo von Debschitz (born February 3, 1966 in Offenbach am Main ) is a German designer and author .

life and work

After school in Offenbach am Main and community service in Wiesbaden, von Debschitz studied communication design at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences and completed his studies as a designer. He then worked for various advertising and design agencies. In 1997, together with Laurenz Nielbock, he founded the design agency Q in Wiesbaden, which has received numerous national and international awards for its work. During his agency work, he carried out teaching assignments for the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences and the Institute for Marketing and Communication. He lives and works in Wiesbaden .

In addition to his work as a designer, von Debschitz also appears as an author and editor of books with a focus on design. In 2006, on the occasion of the exhibition “Art Countdown” in the Opel villas in Rüsselsheim, the volume of the same name with 52 works by the artists Sandra and Uwe Fischer was published. Up until the kick-off of the soccer World Cup in Germany, the couple created one wooden sculpture a week with a soccer connection over the course of a year. Von Debschitz initiated the campaign together with Bernd Müller and was responsible as editor and designer of the book. Thilo von Debschitz published two art volumes on the German photographer Frank Kunert . The first volume "Upside Down World" received the German Photo Book Prize 2009.

Together with his sister Uta von Debschitz, Thilo von Debschitz did research in international archives in order to make the work of the popular scientific author Fritz Kahn visible again. The first monograph on Kahn was published in 2009 under the title Fritz Kahn / Man Machine . A second, completely revised version of the siblings was published in 2013 under the title Fritz Kahn . The third issue was published in 2017 with the title Fritz Kahn. Infographics Pioneer in the language versions English / French / German and English / Italian / Spanish. The rediscovery of Kahn by the von Debschitz siblings received great attention worldwide; in numerous reviews of the Debschitz books, Kahn's importance as a pioneer in the visualization of information was emphasized. The US magazine Fast Company counted the monograph among the best design books of 2013 and declared Fritz Kahn a “Grandfather of Data Visualization”. In addition, “Fritz Kahn” was nominated for Knowledge Book of the Year in the category “Aesthetics” in 2014 and in the official selection of the TED Book Club included.

Thilo von Debschitz is a member and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club Wiesbaden- Kochbrunnen . In Wiesbaden, Thilo von Debschitz is one of the founders and active members of the city's creative industry working group. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Goldene Lilie in the Hessian state capital, a competition for corporate social engagement.

In 2017, Thilo von Debschitz was appointed to the jury of the international design competition Red Dot Design Award , to which he has been a member since then. In 2018, he was also a member of the jury for the Hessian State Prize for Universal Design of the Hessian Ministry for Social Affairs and Integration. In 2020 the designer will also be a juror at the Rhineland-Palatinate Design Prize.

In 2012, together with his business partner Laurenz Nielbock, von Debschitz received the German Citizens' Prize for special voluntary commitment as an entrepreneur.
