The Thirlmere Aqueduct is the longest aqueduct in Great Britain with a length of 153 km. It runs from the Lake District to Manchester . It transports the water from the Thirlmere Reservoir to Manchester. It can transport 227 million liters of water a day. It was planned and built by the hydraulic engineer John Frederic Bateman and his student or later partner George Henry Hill on behalf of the Manchester Corporation Water Works .

History of the building

The planning for this structure began in 1875. Construction began in 1890 after 4 years the Thirlmere Reservoir was opened, the complete construction lasted until 1925. The construction costs amounted to 2.2 million British pounds. Sometimes the structure is referred to as the longest tunnel in the world, but this is wrong because the tunnel route has interruptions. Today the structure is owned by United Utilities .

The part of the Thirlmere Aqueduct over the River Irwell was added to the List of Historic Buildings and classified as a Grade II * structure.
