Tiruvarur ( Tamil : திருவாரூர் Tiruvārūr [ ˈtiɾɯʋaːɾuːr ], also: Thiruvarur or Tiruvalur , not to be confused with Tiruvallur ) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is located in eastern Tamil Nadu in the mouth of the Kaveri delta . The next largest cities are the on the Coromandel Coast located Nagapattinam 24 kilometers east and Thanjavur 56 km south-west. Chennai , the capital of the state, is around 260 kilometers north. Tiruvarur is the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The population is around 58,000 (2011 census).

The Hindu Tyagaraja Temple forms the center of Tiruvarur . The approximately eight hectare temple complex houses shrines for the deities Vanmikanathar, Tyagaraja (both manifestations of Shiva ) and Kamalamba (the god's consort). Right next to the temple is the Kamalalayam pond, which, with an area of ​​over ten hectares, is one of the largest temple ponds in India. Tiruvarur was sung in the 7th century in the devotional hymns of the poets Tirugnanasambandar and Tirunavukkarasar . The oldest inscriptions in the Tyagaraja Temple are from the Chola kings of the 9th and 10th centuries.

84 percent of the population of Tiruvarur are Hindus , 14 percent are Muslims and 1 percent are Christians . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 99 percent of the population as their mother tongue.
