Thiruvavaduthurai ( Tamil : திருவாவடுதுறை Tiruvāvaṭutuṟai [ ˈt̪iɾɯˌʋaːʋəɖɯˌd̪urɛi̯ ], also Tiruvavaduthurai, Tiruvaduthurai ) is a village in the Nagapattinam district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . The population is around 7,000 (2011 census). Thiruvavaduthurai is best known for its important Hindu monastery ( Matha ), the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam .

geography

Thiruvavaduthurai is located in the Kaveri Delta on the south bank of the Kaveri main arm. Administratively, the place belongs to the Taluk Kuthalam of the Nagapattinam district. The next largest cities are Kumbakonam 17 kilometers west and Mayiladuthurai 17 kilometers east. The distance to Chennai (Madras), the capital of the state, is around 270 kilometers. The road from Kumbakonam to Mayiladuthurai (State Highway 22) passes Thiruvavaduthurai north. The nearest train station is in the neighboring town of Narasingampettai, around one and a half kilometers to the west.

In Thiruvavaduthurai there is an important Hindu monastery ( Mathas ), the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam. The Convent of Thiruvavaduthurai is a shivaitische means and members of not Brahminic carried box. In addition to the monasteries of Dharmapuram (Dharmapuram Adheenam) and Thiruppanandal (Thiruppanandal Kasi Math), also located in the Kaveri Delta, the Thiruvavaduthurai Adheenam is one of the most influential and wealthy Shivaite institutions in Tamil Nadu.

The main temple of Thiruvavaduthurai, the Masilamaniswarar or Gomuttiswarar temple, is dedicated to the god Shiva . The sanctuary was already in the 7./8. Century sung in the Tevaram hymns of the poet saints Appar , Sundarar and Sambandar . Thiruvavaduthurai is one of the 274 holy places of Tamil Shaivism ( Padal Petra Sthalams ). The temple houses the tomb ( samadhi ) of the mystic Tirumular , who wrote the Tirumandiram in the 7th century .

The Masilamaniswarar Temple is under the administration of the Thiruvavaduthurai Monastery and is spatially closely connected to it. The outer walls of the monastery and the temple complex are directly connected to each other. A gate leads from the temple complex directly onto the monastery grounds.
