The Thomas Mann Archive is an archive of the ETH Library Zurich . It secures and maintains the literary estate of the German writer Thomas Mann . Thomas Mann's last study is reproduced in an exhibition with original furnishings. A reading room is available to researchers and the interested public to use the holdings.

The Thomas Mann Archive is the publisher of the scientific series Thomas Mann Studies . The archive management is professionally advised by a board of trustees. Since 2017, as part of the Thomas Mann Lectures lecture series, an international personality related to Thomas Mann's work has been invited to ETH for a public lecture every year.

history

The Thomas Mann Archive was founded in 1956. The first location was in the main building of ETH Zurich . In 1961 the archive was moved to the nearby Bodmerhaus on Schönberggasse, where it was housed until June 2016. The Thomas Mann Archive is currently located in a provisional facility on the Hönggerberg campus . In January 2012, the Thomas Mann Archive, which at that time was directly subordinate to the ETH Executive Board, was incorporated into the ETH Library. The Thomas Mann Archive has been headed by Germanist Katrin Bedenig Stein since 2012. Previous directors were Paul Scherrer (1956–1961), Hans Wysling (1962–1993) and Thomas Sprecher (1994–2012).

Stocks

All manuscript holdings are electronically indexed and digitized. Thomas Mann's estate includes his diaries and notebooks, work manuscripts, material collections, handwritten documents and letters, historical press articles and photographs. Some of the digital copies can be viewed online.

Thomas Mann's estate library comprises around 4,300 copies, the library of his wife Katia comprises 421 titles. The estate library is supplemented by works by the writer and secondary literature on Thomas Mann's life and work.
