Paul Scherrer also Scherrer-Bylund (born August 28, 1900 in St. Gallen ; † March 28, 1992 ibid.), Entitled to live in St. Gallen, was a Swiss librarian .

Life

Paul Scherrer, the youngest son of the St. Gallen merchant, city ​​councilor and puppet theater manager Hermann Scherrer and the née Sophie Gehrig, attended primary school in St. Gallen, passed the Matura at the Humanistic Gymnasium St. Gallen before studying German at the Universities of Munich , Berlin and Glasgow , which he achieved in Munich in 1927 with the acquisition of the academic degree of Dr. phil. completed.

In January 1929, Paul Scherrer was elected as a research assistant at the University Library of Basel , where he was appointed librarian in 1931, and in 1947 he moved to the ETH-Bibliothek Zurich as senior librarian , where he took over the management in 1953; he was also director from 1956 to 1961 of the Thomas-Mann Archive. In 1963, Scherrer was given the post of director of the central library in Zurich , which he filled until he retired in 1971.

During his tenure as director of the central library in Zurich, Paul Scherrer was primarily responsible for its expansion into a modern academic general library. Paul Scherrer - his first marriage was Tamara née Wintsch in 1929, his second marriage was Barbro née Bylund in 1963 - he died on March 28, 1992, five months before he was 92, in his hometown of St. Gallen.
