On Off is a song by the German rapper and singer Shirin David from 2019, which was created in collaboration with the Congolese-French singer Maître Gims . It was released as the fifth single from David's debut album, Supersize , and was written by herself along with Chima Ede , Gims, Kool Savas and the track's producers, FNSHRS. , written.
Music and lyrics
On Off is a pop song with sung verses and a chorus. Both artists, David and Gims, each sing a verse and together the refrain and the bridge. The lyrics are about a relationship between two partners who keep breaking up and reconciling because they cannot get along with each other, but also not without each other. Unlike other artists' titles on this subject, it is not a melancholy ballad, but a happy, summery song. Shirin David sings the first verse and is supported from the chorus by Gims, who then sings the second verse. The song is also in A minor and counts 105 beats per minute.
Creation and publication
David wrote On Off with their producer FNSHRS. and the rappers Chima Ede and Kool Savas . She is the first German act to secure a feature with Maître Gims . To prepare for the feature, David and her team flew to Paris to visit Gims' recording studio and talk to him personally about the feature. She documented this on her YouTube channel. With this video and an accompanying Instagram post, David announced the single on June 23, 2019. The title itself was released on June 28, 2019 along with the music video. On July 7th, a making of for the music video, which was produced by Anton Schmidt-Wünkhaus, went online. To date (as of July 2020), the music video has already generated over 27 million views on YouTube.
Music video
The music video for On Off , like the videos for Gib Him and ICE , was shot exclusively in a studio by 100Blackdolphins under the direction of PLUG. The opening scene shows David in white pajamas in a white room, while the second shows David with two dancers in blue boxes in front of a pink background and dancing. What makes the video stand out is that it looks as if most of it was shot in one piece. However, this impression is disturbed by the change of outfit and scenery, which creates the unique character of the music video. In further scenes, David and Gims, who is part of the video from the chorus on, are in front of a cartoon-like backdrop of houses with dancers, in an airplane with the inscription SupAIRsize (allusion to their debut album Supersize) on the seats and in the rain in front of one dancing to another backdrop. Both artists go through several outfit changes.
criticism
On Off received mostly positive reviews. The catchy character as well as the interesting German-French combination was often praised. David received criticism for wearing quite dark make-up on promo pictures for the single and partly in the music video. She was accused of blackfishing , the appropriation of the Afro culture of people of different colors. In addition, the fact that David works with Gims was occasionally criticized because he made homophobic statements in some of his own songs.
Charts and chart placements
On Off reached number three in the German single charts and stayed in the charts for 14 weeks. For David, since Gib Ihm reached number one in the charts, it was already the third top 5 hit and already her sixth place in the top 10 of the German charts. In Austria the single reached position five and stayed in the charts for nine weeks. In Switzerland , On Off reached its highest chart listing at position six and was on the charts for six weeks. To date (as of May 2020) it is her best chart position in Switzerland.
