ICE (English spoken Ice ) is a song by the German rapper Shirin David from 2019. The third single from her debut album Supersize was released by the artist herself together with Chima Ede and the track's producer, FNSHRS. , written.

Music and lyrics

ICE is a hip-hop song with slight touches of the subgenres Dirty South and Trap . A catchy flute melody and a xylophone reminiscent tones are here from 808 - bass drums , hi-hats , and repeated as rim shots played snares highlighted. The verses are rapped by Shirin David in a playful as well as aggressive tone, whereby their flow is closer to that of classic hip-hop than that of modern trap. During the chorus, her voice is auto-tuned , making it sound more melodic. The central theme of the song is the money the musician has earned through her success and the luxury goods that she spends on. She consistently displays a proud and dominant attitude. The sums and situations described are sometimes oversubscribed, for example when the rapper mentions that she receives two containers full of money every hour .

Music video

The music video for ICE , which was created under the direction of Plug , partially emphasizes the ambiguity of the title (literally “ ice cream ” as well as colloquially “high-priced jewelry ”). Shirin David is sitting in several shots, wearing a diadem and a fur coat , in a bathtub made of ice that floats on water , or lounging on several blocks of ice that are surrounded by two candlesticks and formed into a pedestal . Other scenes show, among other things, two dogs on a leash in front of a multitude of antique- looking statues , kneeling on a darkly lit water surface or dancing in front of the number combination "90-60-111" during a snowfall . This also represents the license plate of one of two pink cars on which Shirin David and her sister Patricia Davidavicius are sitting. Towards the end of the video, the interpreter can be seen more often wrapped in plastic wrap with dollars printed on it. During the entire clip, there are intercuts on luxurious accessories , some of which were draped in a suggestive way.

criticism

ICE received mixed reviews. The song was said to be catchy and the good sound of the production was praised, but the parallels to various other songs and musicians were criticized. Shirin David's flow and demeanor were repeatedly compared with those of the internationally successful rapper and singer Nicki Minaj , with individual voices sometimes feeling that she definitely had the potential to become her German counterpart. In addition, several reviewers noticed that the beat of the title was very similar to that of the number-one hit DODI by German rapper Shindy . It was also criticized that ICE differs too little from David's previous single Gib him . In particular, the two text passages "Are you not talking about cash, I don't understand a sentence" (from Gib him ) and "Are you not talking about cash, wrong frequency" (from ICE ) were received in several reviews as being conspicuously close to each other. The related video was also debated in a similar way. As with the music itself, it was noted that it was made exceptionally well and of high quality, but also recognized strong similarities to the clip of the song Ice Me Out by the musician Kash Doll , and also compared David's costume with that of Nicki Minaj in the video for Ganja Burn .

success

In Germany and Austria ICE reached number eight in the single charts. In Switzerland , the single reached number 28. The music video has to date (July 2020) more than 20 million views on YouTube.
