Hoes Up G's Down is a rap title by the German rapper and singer Shirin David from 2020. It was released as the second single from her second studio album on May 29, 2020. It was written by David himself together with the German rapper Bozza, the composition comes from Juh-Dee and Young Mesh.

Music and lyrics

Hoes Up G's Down is a rap song that uses the beat of the song (Always Be My) Sunshine by Jay-Z , which is based on the song Die Mensch-Maschine by Kraftwerk , as an instrumental . David raps less hard than with their previous single 90-60-111 and more in the style of their singles Gib Ihm und ICE . She uses a rather wicked and "sexy" undertone while rapping. The chorus of the track is a mixture of rap and vocals, but it is more different from the rapped verses. The title of the song refers to the exclamation G's up, ho's / hoes down , which comes from classic hip-hop, and for which Snoop Dogg has already released a song in the past. This sentence indicates that one must praise the gangsters (abbreviation G ) and keep the whores (abbreviation Ho or Hoe ) small. She turns this image around and gives the word Hoe (whore) in this context a rather proud and emancipated undertone, instead of just negatively burdening it. David again addresses an expensive lifestyle in the lyrics ( you have to be free from giddiness for the list price of my AP Ice ), freedom of movement ( a little bare skin does no harm ) and also mentions other prominent personalities like Lil Kim ( Pinky Ring like Lil 'Kim in Hypnotize (Uhh) ) or Katy Perry ( Through the Valley, Cali Girls like Katy Perry ) in a positive or at least neutral context.

Creation and publication

David wrote Hoes Up G's Down - like the previous single 90-60-111 - together with the German rapper Bozza . As with 90-60-111, Juh-Dee was the producer with Young Mesh who worked with Frio on this. A short excerpt from the song was shown in the music video for 90-60-111 as Sneak Peak. David Hoes first announced Up G's Down with pictures and videos of their extras from the music video in their Instagram story and using the hashtag HUGD three days before the release. David published the actual name and the single cover shortly afterwards. The cover shows her and three of her extras posing in swimwear. The single was actually released on the night of May 28th to 29th. On June 3, her online shop Shirizzleshop also released a limited merchandise collection for the single, which included three t-shirts and a hoodie. These were only offered as a bundle with a maxi CD , which in addition to Hoes Up G's Down also contains 90-60-111 . The song was advertised by MTV Germany in the “Most Wanted” category, which meant that the song could be heard in various commercial breaks.

Music video shoot scandal

For the shooting of the music video for Hoes Up G's Down , David and her production team rented a villa in Berlin-Westend for May 24th and 25th, 2020. Since severe restrictions and measures had also been decided in Berlin due to the COVID-19 pandemic , they followed their own statements and the statements of guests, at the beginning of the shooting very strongly. After loosening the public meeting for up to 100 people for May 25th, numerous extras came to the video shoot around midnight, who were supposed to play in the music video. As a result, some neighbors complained to the police about the noise. This then moved to the villa shortly afterwards and the shoot was finished very quickly. According to press reports, over 70 reports were filed for violating the Corona measures to protect against infection and one report against David's management for too loud music. David himself stated that both the video shoot and the noise had been registered beforehand and that the police could only be seen in the music video, as they could not shoot all the scenes before the shoot was canceled.

Music video

The music video for Hoes Up G's Down was filmed under the direction of Shaho Casado , like the videos for Fliegst Du mit und 90-60-111 . The shooting took place on the property of a villa in Berlin. It appeared on their YouTube channel on May 31, 2020 . The music video starts with a recording of the Berlin skyline, then you see a drone recording of the villa where the video was shot, with party noises and music. Then you see a man in a suit reading a headline in the BZ about the controversial music video shoot. On this one can see David from behind, which was then edited so that she turns around. In the further course of the music video you can see many party scenes in the villa and in the area of the pool. The backgrounds were repeatedly colored differently through post-processing, e.g. B. blue and pink. David also shows himself jet-skiing in the pool, twerking with her extras with Grillz at the table, dancing with other women and sitting soaked in the pool. Her sister Patricia ( known as PatiValPati on the Internet and on YouTube ) can also be seen in the video as a lifeguard . As with 90-60-111 , the music video again conveys the mood of the early 2000s and late 90s. This happens through the clothing of the artist and the extras, as well as through camera settings or effects, such as. B. with a fisheye lens . The video ends after two minutes and 35 seconds with a scene in which you can see a sequence with numerous police cars filmed from a moving car. In the course of the video, Shirin David went through numerous changes to her hairstyle and outfit again, as in all of her music videos, all of which show quite freely what fits both the conveyed summer and party mood and the lyrics of the song ( a bit bare skin does no harm ).

criticism

The music video, which had previously been number 1 on YouTube trends for hours, was subject to an age restriction less than 24 hours after publication, which was however lifted a little later. After that, it also got back into the trends. The music video received around 1.4 million views as well as 95,000 likes and 30,000 dislikes after 24 hours.

The YouTube comments were mostly negative, but there were also a few comments defending Shirin David. Above all, her revealing appearance in the video was criticized. Others also saw parallels in the sound, the lyrics and the flow of the song with the rapper Shindy , with whom Shirin had an argument, which is why they accused her of "copying".

The journalist Laura Wolfert expressed herself very positively in an online article about the song, but admitted that her positive opinion of David was negatively influenced by the irresponsibility of the video shoot and the resulting lack of a role model. The YouTuber 2Bough, on the other hand, praised the good production and the improved emphasis compared to their earlier works in a video for Hoes Up G's Down . He also said she always entertained him with her music and positively emphasized the many references to other hip-hop and R&B artists. Oliver Pocher also commented negatively on the music video shoot and the associated party, calling it "stupidity" and questioning her thoughts on feminism.

success

Hoes Up G's Down was listened to almost 4 million times on Spotify within the first week and the accompanying music video also had over 3.5 million views on YouTube a week after its publication, despite several temporary age restrictions .
