Thomas A. Hirst

Thomas Archer Hirst (born April 22, 1830 in Heckmondwike , Yorkshire, † February 16, 1892 in London ) was an English mathematician.

In 1865 he became professor of physics at University College London (UCL) and in 1867 he succeeded Augustus de Morgan on the chair of mathematics at UCL. In 1873 he became Director of Studies at the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. Hirst studied mathematics at various European universities and left behind a number of informative diaries (published by Gardner, Wilson in American Mathematical Monthly 1993).

Hirst was a member of the Royal Society , the British Association for the Advancement of Science, and the London Mathematical Society .

In 1883 he was awarded the Royal Medal of the Royal Society.
