Thomas Bachofen from Echt
Thomas Bachofen von Echt (also Thomas Bachoffen; * June 1540 in Cologne ; † February 4 or July 12, 1597 in Gotha ) was a German merchant and mayor of Gotha.
Life
Thomas Bachofen von Echt came to Gotha from Cologne via Wittenberg around 1570 . Today's town hall was still a department store and was converted into the town hall under it. He left a large sum of money which, divided and paid interest, was given to the poor every year on St. Thomas's Day at the town hall. It was the so-called "Annual Thomas Money". He was buried in the “old churchyard” in a crypt specially built for the family. The crypt was torn away in 1848 and only the tombstone remained. In 1887 the stone was brought from Echt to Vienna-Nussdorf on behalf of Karl Adolf Bachofen. later the stone was brought to the Murstätten estate of his youngest son Reinhard in southern Styria, where it was rediscovered in 2016.
