Thomas Bauernhansl (born December 3, 1969 in Miltenberg ) is professor of production technology and factory operations. Since September 2011 he has been head of the Institute for Industrial Manufacturing and Factory Management (IFF) at the University of Stuttgart and head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology and Automation IPA.

Professional career

After studying mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University , Thomas Bauernhansl was a research assistant at the chair for production systems at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Operations Management (WZL) at RWTH Aachen University from 1998 to 2003. From 1999 to 2001, Bauernhansl headed the “Process and Technology Planning” group and from 2001 to 2003 the “Integrated Product Design” departments and, from 2002, “Corporate Development”. In June 2002 he received his doctorate in engineering. with the topic "Evaluation of synergy potentials in mechanical engineering" at Walter Eversheim .

Between April 2003 and June 2003 he worked at Freudenberg & Co. as an assistant to the management. From July 2003 to October 2003 he was managing director for toolmaking at Freudenberg Anlagen- und Werkzeugtechnik GmbH, then until September 2007 the management spokesman. From October 2007 until the end of 2010 he was head of the Technology Center at Freudenberg Dichtungs- und Schwingungstechnik GmbH & Co. KG. From January 2011 to August 2011 he was Head of Global Process Technology at Freudenberg Sealing Technologies.

Since September 2011, Thomas Bauernhansl has succeeded Engelbert Westkämper as head of the Institute for Industrial Manufacturing and Factory Management (IFF) at the University of Stuttgart and the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology and Automation IPA. Thomas Bauernhansl is involved in numerous advisory councils and board committees in industry, associations, research and politics and is a member of the WGP, the Scientific Society for Production Technology and a member of the strategy group of the Industry 4.0 platform of the federal government as well as deputy chairman of the steering group of the Allianz Industrie 4.0 BW. He is the author and editor of numerous books a. a. on versatility in production, on Industry 4.0 and management in production.

Private

Thomas Bauernhansl is married and has one child.
