Engelbert Westkämper

Engelbert Westkämper (born March 7, 1946 in Schloss Neuhaus / Paderborn ) is professor of production engineering and factory operations and former director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Engineering and Automation (IPA), Stuttgart .

Life

Westkämper was born in Paderborn in 1946 . After graduating from high school Theodorianum (Paderborn), he studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University from 1967 to 1973 and initially graduated as a graduate engineer. In 1977 he received his doctorate from RWTH Aachen University with distinction.

From 1977 to 1988 he held managerial positions at MBB and AEG .

From 1988 to 1995 Westkämper was head of the Institute for Machine Tools and Manufacturing Technology at the University of Braunschweig . From 1995 to 2011 he held the chair and director of the Institute for Industrial Manufacturing and Factory Management at the University of Stuttgart (IFF) as well as one of the two directors of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Engineering and Automation (IPA) in Stuttgart, before retiring due to old age. Thomas Bauernhansl took over his duties at the IFF and IPA . From 2002 to 2006 Westkämper was Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

In 2006 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
