Thomas Birch Florence (born January 26, 1812 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , †  July 3, 1875 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1861 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Thomas Florence attended the public schools in his home country and completed an apprenticeship as a hat maker. He worked in this craft since 1833. He also got into the newspaper business. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In the years 1846 and 1848 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the congressional elections of 1850 Florence was then elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the first constituency of Pennsylvania, where he succeeded Lewis Charles Levin on March 4, 1851 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1861. These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Thomas Florence worked in the newspaper industry in Washington. In 1868 and 1874 he competed unsuccessfully to return to Congress. He died in Washington on July 3, 1875, and was buried in Philadelphia.
