Thomas Birk (born October 20, 1961 in Krefeld ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). From 2005 to 2016 he was a member of the Berlin House of Representatives , where he was spokesman for the areas of administrative modernization and queer politics.

Birk lives with his husband in Berlin-Schöneberg. His sister is the GREEN politician Angelika Birk .

education and profession

Birk graduated from high school in 1981 and studied theater studies at the Free University of Berlin in 1981. From 1982 to 1986 he attended the Hamburg University of Music and Theater , where he graduated in 1986 as a qualified actor. Until 1993 he was active in various acting engagements in Osnabrück, Mainz, Erfurt and Berlin. From 1992 to 1998 Thomas Birk studied political science at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin and obtained his diploma in 1997. From 1995 to 2005 he was managing director of the local political forum Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Berlin e. V. and in 2002 managing director of the Bildungswerk für Alternative Kommunalpolitik e. V.

Party and politics

Thomas Birk joined the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party in 1992. From 1992 to 1995 he was a member of the executive committee of the Charlottenburg district association. From 1995 to 2001 he was a member of the district assembly group Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in Charlottenburg and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. From 1999 to 2001 Birk was BVV parliamentary group chairman and in 2002 district board spokesman. On September 30, 2005, Birk was a successor member of the House of Representatives. In the election for the House of Representatives in September 2006, Birk achieved the second highest result of the first votes after Annette Fugmann-Heesing for constituency 1 Schöneberg-Nord with 24.5% and moved into the House of Representatives via his list. A focus of his political work lies in the lesbian, gay and transgender areas. He is also committed to modern administration, e-government and the preservation of district cultural institutions. In the election to the Berlin House of Representatives in 2011 in September 2011, Birk was directly re-elected with 32.1% of the first votes. In 2016 he left the House of Representatives.

As of May 2015, he is a member of the commission on dealing with pedophilia and sexual violence against children of the Berlin Greens.
