Thomas Drummond (born October 10, 1797 in Edinburgh , Scotland , † April 15, 1840 in Dublin , Ireland ) was a British officer , engineer , and civil servant .

The lime light he introduced is also called Drummond's light .

After graduating from school, Drummond was a cadet at the Royal Military Academy , where he was trained as a royal engineer. After he had worked in an authority in Edinburgh and as a surveyor in the Scottish Highlands, he went to the new land surveying authority in Ireland. There he demonstrated in 1824 that the limestone light could still be seen from 68 miles away, and thus much further the gas or oil lamps used until then.

From 1835 until his death in 1840, Drummond was the Undersecretary for Ireland , making it one of the four highest British officials in Ireland.
