Thomas Fartmann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Fartmann (* 1968 ) is a German biogeographer and ecologist . In 2015 he was appointed adjunct professor at the University of Osnabrück .

Vita

From 1989 to 1995, Fartmann studied geography (majoring in landscape ecology) at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. After professional practice, he received his doctorate in 2002 on the butterfly communities of the semi-arid grass complexes of the Diemel Valley . For his dissertation he received the dissertation award of the mathematical and natural science faculty of the University of Münster. In 2007 he completed his habilitation with the venia legendi in ecology and biogeography. In his habilitation thesis, Fartmann dealt with the larval ecology of butterflies and rams as the basis for successful habitat management. From 2008 to 2014 he worked as an academic senior counselor at the Institute for Landscape Ecology and during this time received the teaching award from the Geosciences Department at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster. This was followed by the representation of the professorship for ecology at the University of Osnabrück. Since 2016, he has headed the Department of Biodiversity and Landscape Ecology at the University of Osnabrück as an adjunct professor. He is also the first chairman of the German Society for Orthopterology (DGfO).

research

Fartmann's current research activities focus on the effects of global change on biodiversity. In addition, topics of disturbance and renaturation ecology are among his research focuses . The focus is on spatio-temporal patterns of species communities and the environmental factors that determine them. His investigations are characterized by a large taxonomic breadth. The most important indicator groups include plants, birds, amphibians, spiders, dragonflies, grasshoppers, cicadas, ground beetles as well as butterflies and rams. To date, Fartmann has published more than 150 scientific publications.
