Thomas Fiedler (born March 15, 1951 in Düsseldorf ) was Mayor of Geilenkirchen from 2009 to 2015 .

Life and work

In 1970 Fiedler passed his Abitur at the Benrath Castle High School in Düsseldorf. He then studied linguistics and history at the University of Cologne from 1970 to 1976. Until his election as mayor in Geilenkirchen, he worked as a municipal civil servant at the city of Aachen in the business development / European affairs department. Thomas Fiedler lives in the Geilenkirchen district of Hünshoven , is married and has a daughter.

Political career

The non-party Thomas Fiedler was set up in 2009 by a four-party alliance made up of the SPD , FDP , the citizens' list and the Greens as a joint candidate for the election of the mayor of Geilenkirchen. With the local election on August 30, 2009, he replaced his opponent, the incumbent mayor Andreas Borghorst ( CDU ) in his office. On September 29, 2010, the four-party alliance broke up. After that, Fiedler headed the administration without a majority in the city council. On April 27, 2015, Thomas Fiedler told the Aachener Zeitung that he would not run again as a candidate for the upcoming mayoral election in Geilenkirchen on September 13, 2015, but would retire after the end of the election period on October 20.
