from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Fiennes, 8th Baron Dacre (* around 1472 or 1474; † September 9, 1533 ) was an English peer and politician .

Origin and family

Thomas Fiennes was the eldest son of Sir John Fiennes and his wife Alice FitzHugh , the eldest daughter of Henry FitzHugh, 5th Baron FitzHugh and Alice Neville. Since his father had already died, he inherited after the death of his grandmother Joan Dacre, de iure 7th Baroness Dacre in 1485 their possessions and the title of Baron Dacre .

Political career

Although Thomas Fiennes was only 12 years old when his grandmother died, his legal age has not been verified. So it happened that the inherited lands were transferred to him on July 13, 1492, without the prerequisites for this, namely the age of majority, being examined. From 1492 he studied at Gray's Inn in London. On the occasion of the elevation of the younger king's son Henry in 1494 to Duke of York Fiennes was beaten to Knight of the Bath . As early as 1493 he had been given the post of Commandant of Calais . On June 14, 1497 he took part in the Battle of Deptford Bridge , in which a rebel army from Cornwall was defeated. On October 14, 1495, Fiennes was first appointed to the House of Lords by writ of summons . While he was in the favor of the king under Henry VII , this changed under Henry VIII. He was arrested for alleged harbor felony , but was released again. In July 1530 he signed the letter of the House of Lords to Pope Clement VII , in which the House of Lords asked the Pope to annul the king's marriage with Catherine of Aragon .

Marriage and offspring

Fiennes had married Anne Bourchier († after 1530), a daughter of Sir Humphrey Bourchier and his wife Elizabeth Tilney , around 1492 . With her he had at least two children:

  • Sir Thomas Fiennes (1495–1528) ∞ Joan Sutton († 1539)
  • Mary Fiennes († 1533) ∞ Sir Henry Norris

Fiennes was buried in Herstmonceux , Sussex , near his headquarters, Herstmonceux Castle . Since his son Thomas Fiennes had already died before him, his son Thomas Fiennes became his heir.
