Henry FitzHugh, 5th Baron FitzHugh

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Henry FitzHugh, 5th Baron FitzHugh ( 1429 - June 8, 1472 ) was an English nobleman .

Life

Henry FitzHugh was the only son of William FitzHugh, 4th Baron FitzHugh and Margery Willoughby, daughter of William Willoughby, 5th Baron Willoughby de Eresby . When his father died in 1452, he inherited his title of Baron FitzHugh and his lands including the family seat of Ravensworth Castle .

As a baron he took part in the parliaments from 1455 to 1470 and in 1453 had the function of auditor (in English Trier ). He was Master Forester & Keeper of the new Forests Arkengarthdale and Hope and received the position of Steward of the Honor of Richmond in 1460 by King Henry VI. In 1468 he received approval and went on a pilgrimage to the holy places in Jerusalem .

Henry is described by some sources as a loyal supporter of the House of Lancaster , while others describe him as more half-hearted about it. During the Wars of the Roses , Lord FitzHugh fought for Lancaster at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460, the Second Battle of St Albans in 1461, at Towton in 1461 and Hexham in 1464. Nevertheless, Lord FitzHugh must have succeeded at times with Edward IV , after his coronation in early 1461, not to fall out of favor, since he was in his service at least in 1461/62.

During the Northern Rebellion in 1469, initiated by his brother-in-law Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick , Lord FitzHugh was one of the rebels. This riot was led by a certain Robin of Redesdale , although this was just a pseudonym. The actual person behind it was one of Richard Neville's close confidants, most likely Sir William Conyers of Marske, who acted at Neville's behest. In July 1469 the situation led to the Battle of Edgecote Moor , in which Lord FitzHugh also took part.

The following year, Baron FitzHugh again provoked riots in the north to distract from the landing of his brother-in-law, Richard Neville, and his army on the southwest coast. Lord FitzHugh had to flee to Scotland before the approaching royal army .

Henry FitzHugh, 5th Baron FitzHugh, died in 1472.
