Thomas Freund (politician)

Thomas Freund (born July 26, 1850 in Laa an der Thaya ; † January 20, 1937 in Mistelbach ) was an Austrian politician ( DVP / CSP ) and director of the savings bank. Between 1909 and 1915 and from 1918 to 1919 he was a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament .

Freund worked as a businessman and was director of the municipal Sparkasse Mistelbach for over two decades. He was also involved as mayor of Mistelbach from 1888 to 1911 and pushed the expansion of the infrastructure through construction. Under his direction, schools and the hospital were built, the streets were paved, a sewer network was built, gas and water pipes were laid, and afforestation began. He was also the initiator of the Mistelbach – Gänserndorf state railway and a member of the district school council. In 1904 he was awarded the Golden Cross of Merit with the crown .

Politically, Freund represented the moderate direction in the German People's Party and was elected to the state parliament on January 8, 1909 as their compromise candidate. He served as a member of the DVP until January 8, 1915, but subsequently joined the Christian Social Party, which he represented in the provisional state parliament of Lower Austria between November 5, 1918 and May 4, 1919.
