Thomas Geider

Thomas Geider (born April 29, 1953 in Bonn ; † October 15, 2010 ) was a German philologist for African languages ​​and an ethnologist .

Life

After studying geography , ethnology and African studies in Bonn and Cologne, Geider received his doctorate in 1989 with a thesis on "The figure of the ogre in traditional literature and the world of Pokomo in East Kenya". From 1991 to 1996 he held the position of a research assistant at the Frankfurt Collaborative Research Center “Cultural Development and Language History in the Natural Area of ​​the West African Savannah”.

His teaching and research on African languages ​​and oral literature led him to the universities of Maiduguri (Nigeria), Leipzig and Mainz, where he a. a. was employed as scientific director of the Janheinz Jahn library. After his habilitation in 2001 on “Motive research in folk tales of the Kanuri” in the Faculty of Linguistics and Cultural Studies at the Goethe University in Frankfurt, he taught as a private lecturer. In 2007 Geider was appointed Associate Professor at the Goethe University due to his services to African oratura research.

Geider died of a stroke.
