Thomas Gerberich

Thomas Gerberich (* 1954 ) is a German diplomat . He was most recently Ambassador to North Macedonia from August 2017 to June 2020 .

After studying Sinology at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Thomas Gerberich joined the Foreign Service in 1992.

After a period in the economic department of the Foreign Office, he was first transferred to the Consulate General in Hong Kong in 1995 and in the same year took over the post of Deputy Head of the Consulate General in Canton. In 1998 Gerberich came back to the Foreign Office in Berlin and worked in the policy department of the United Nations Department until 2002.

From 2002 to 2004 he was deputy head of the Pyongyang embassy and then headed the Consulate General in Chengdu until 2006. After serving as Deputy Head of East Asia Division in the Foreign Office (2006–2008), from 2008 to 2009 he was in charge of the Political Department at the Beijing Embassy.

In 2009 he returned to the United Nations Department in Berlin and dealt with economic and development issues. In 2011 he moved to the United Nations policy department as deputy head of unit.

In 2013 Gerberich became Head of Division in the International Order, United Nations and Arms Control Department.

In August 2017 Gerberich went to Skopje, North Macedonia as the German ambassador , where he succeeded Christine Althauser . He stayed in this position until June 2020 and was then replaced by Anke Holstein .

Thomas Gerberich is married and has one child.
