Andrew Michael "Andy" Lonergan (born October 19, 1983 in Preston ) is an English football goalkeeper . After eleven years as a professional at his home club Preston North End , he worked for several lower-class English clubs before moving to Liverpool FC as a substitute goalkeeper in the Premier League in July 2019 at the advanced age of 35 .

Career

Lonergan's professional career began in 2000 at his home club Preston North End . There he had previously attended the youth academy and with the then second division he completed his first compulsory championship game on April 22, 2001 against Watford FC (3-2). After lending between 2002 and 2006 at Darlington FC , Blackpool FC , the Wycombe Wanderers and Swindon Town he was from the 2007/08 season, goalkeeper of the club. He completed over 200 competitive games for Preston in the second-highest English division by July 2011, where he achieved greater fame with his scoring from a wide tee in October 2004 against Leicester City .

The Preston period was followed by Lonergan for a year with second division rivals Leeds United , before moving to Bolton Wanderers in July 2012 , who also played in the Football League Championship. He spent three years there and was a regular goalkeeper in his third season. He then moved to London for Fulham FC in the 2015/16 season and the Wolverhampton Wanderers the following year (all also second-rate clubs in England). From his time in Wolverhampton and in the years that followed, Lonergan acted primarily as a substitute goalkeeper for the former club from Leeds and later at Middlesbrough FC and Rochdale AFC .

In July 2019, he surprisingly had the opportunity to switch to the English top club Liverpool FC - as an experienced substitute behind the regular keepers Alisson Becker and Adrián as well as at the side of the young talent Caoimhin Kelleher . In the 2019/20 championship season , Lonergan sat twice on the reserve bench and was able to win the English championship with Liverpool. After the end of the season he left the club without being used.
