Thomas Humphrey Paget (born August 13, 1893 in Watford , Hertfordshire , † 1974 in Sussex ) was a British sculptor , medalist and designer . Signature : HP

Life

Humphrey Paget came from a family of artists and received his education at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy , where he won the Landseer Scholarship . After the First World War he was noticed by the Royal Mint after his success in the designer competition for the sister medal of the Bristol Royal Infirmary . Paget subsequently became an eminent designer of medals and coins and was an advisor to the Royal Mint for over 40 years.

In 1942 he married the sculptor Winifred Turner . They lived in Sussex where he died in 1974.

Works

  • 1936 after the death of George V design of the obverse for the coins of King Edward VIII.
  • 1936 after the abdication of Edward VIII, design of the obverse for the coins of King George VI. This design was then used for many other countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand.
  • After the Second World War he created coins, medals and state seals for a large number of countries, including outside the Commonwealth.
  • 1974 the obverse of the coin of 1 tala with King Malietoa Tanumafili II of Samoa (shown here). The back is made by the New Zealand artist James Berry .
