Thomas Lennard, 1st Earl of Sussex

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Lennard, 15th Baron Dacre and 1st Earl of Sussex (born May 13, 1654 , † November 11, 1715 ) was an English nobleman and politician.

Origin and family

Thomas Lennard came from an old English family who had acquired the barony of Dacre created in the 14th century and the associated hereditary seat in the House of Lords by marrying their heir daughter into the Dacre family , because this barony was a barony by writ , which if not male Heirs could also be passed on to female descendants. He was the son of Francis Lennard, 14th Baron Dacre (1619–1662) and Elisabeth Baying. He was born on May 13, 1654 and baptized in St Paul's Cathedral on May 18, 1654 .

life and career

Thomas Lennard studied at Magdalen College of Oxford University , where he on 23 January 1668 the degree of Masters of Arts (MA) gained. After inheriting his title and seat in the House of Lords when his father died in 1662 , he became a close confidante of King Charles II , who made him Earl of Sussex on October 5, 1674, but mainly because he Anna Palmers, the illegitimate daughter of the king and his lover Barbara Villiers , had married. He was gentleman of the bedchamber from 1680 to 1685.

The now Earl of Sussex was an avid Protestant and active supporter of the revolution of 1688 , which overthrew and expelled the Catholic brother and successor of Charles II, James II . After Jacob II was chased away, his Catholic wife separated from him and followed Jacob II into exile. Thomas Lennard died on November 11, 1715. Since he had no male heirs, the earl title expired on his death, while the barony of Dacre fell between his two daughters in abeyance .
