Thomas Lickona

Thomas Lickona (* 1943 ) is an American developmental psychologist and educationalist who has made a name for himself through his research in the field of character education .

life and work

Lickona studied at Siena College (Bachelor in 1964) and at Ohio University (Master in 1965) and received his doctorate from the State University of New York, Albany . Today he researches and teaches at the State University of New York in Cortland . In 1994 he founded the Center for the 4th and 5th Rs (Respect and Responsibility) at the School of Education there , whose main focus is the promotion of character education in schools, families and communities. The center has since become a national hub for the study and development of character education curricula.

In the 1990s, Lickona was President of the Association for Moral Education . He currently also serves as a consultant for the Character Education Partnership (CEP), a non-partisan organization that promotes character education in Washington, DC . Together with Matthew Davidson, he also initiated the Smart & Good Schools program, a school network that also aims to promote character education.

Lickona has two grown sons and lives in Cortland with his wife Judith. He's a Catholic .
