life and work

After graduating from high school at the humanistic Goethe-Gymnasium in Berlin, Thomas P. Kausel completed an apprenticeship as a film maker. From 1960 he was a camera assistant, then a cameraman for film and television productions in Stuttgart and Munich.

In addition to photographic work (bronze and silver medals for photography), he dealt with painting, first as an autodidact, then for 9 years he learned color design, composition and art history with Hermine Müller-Cejka (painter, Roter Reiter group, Munich). He studied at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg with professors Emilio Vedova , Sandro Chia (working grant), Antonio Diaz, Strawalde , Akos Birkas , Hermann Nitsch and as an assistant at GK Pfahler.

At first Kausel painted representationally. Then, freed from space and perspective, he reduced abstract works to just three motifs:

Thomas P. Kausel - Blue 28
  1. red vertical dyptiches are reminiscent of the human / woman theme
  2. blue right to the sea with horizon and
  3. yellow, green polychromes are associated with landscape.

The encounter with works by Josef Albers , Barnett Newman and US color field painting led to the turning point and Kausel's turn to concrete painting , also known as radical painting , analytical painting , and minimal art . This art does not depict anything, it does not tell anything and only refers to itself - at Kausel everything revolves around the subject of color, around: color substance (color paint), especially the pigments.

Trademarks of Kausel's works are the only 154 pure, unmixed pigments ("pure color has higher energy potential than mixed ones; purer is stronger!") And the inscription of the international official name of the pigment according to the color index system .

Thomas P. Kausel lives in Munich.
