Peternell received his doctorate in 1981 under Hans Grauert at the University of Göttingen ( vector space bundles in the vicinity of compact, complex submanifolds ).

Peternell is Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Emmy Noether Institute at Bar Ilan University and Treasurer of the Oberwolfach Foundation. From 2012 to 2016 he was also the spokesman for the Mathematics Review Board of the German Research Foundation.

He is co-editor of Documenta Mathematica and Manuscripta Mathematica.

He is married to Hans Grauert's daughter Ulrike Peternell, who is also a mathematician.

Stefan Müller-Stach (University of Mainz) is one of his doctoral students .
