Thomas Petry

Thomas Petry (born March 25, 1964 in Idar-Oberstein ) is a German politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). From 2013 to 2016 he was state chairman of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Rhineland-Palatinate .

Personal and honorary positions

Thomas Petry grew up in Idar-Oberstein. He completed an apprenticeship as a road builder from 1980 to 1983 and obtained his technical college entrance qualification in 1985. From 1985 to 1990 he studied architecture at the Mainz University of Applied Sciences and the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences . From 1989 to 1990 he was chairman of the AStA at the Wiesbaden University of Applied Sciences and a member of the student parliament.

In 1980 he became a member of the Bau-Steine-Erden industrial union , today IG Bauen-Agrar-Umwelt . Until 1994 he held various offices as a trade unionist at local, district and state level.

Since 2004 Petry has been a member of the board of the Birkenfeld district association of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen. In the local elections in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2004 , he immediately succeeded in entering the city council of Idar-Oberstein. Since then he has led the green parliamentary group as chairman. In the municipal elections in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2014 , he also succeeded in entering the Birkenfeld district council .

On June 18, 2011, Petry became a member of the executive board of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen Rhineland-Palatinate. Until 2013 he held the office of state treasurer there. At the state delegate assembly on April 20, 2013 in Bingen am Rhein , he was elected by the delegates as state chairman. In the elections, he was able to prevail against the previous incumbent Uwe Diederichs-Seidel . On December 10, 2016, Petry was not re-elected as state chairman. His successor was Josef Winkler . The reason for this was the poor performance of the Greens in the last state election, in which they fell from 15.4% to 5.3% of the vote.

Candidates for full-time political offices

Petry has tried several times to apply for full political office.

He ran twice for the Rhineland-Palatinate state parliament. First in 2011, there he received 12.9% of the vote in his constituency. Another candidacy followed in 2016, when Petry received 6.5% of the vote. Both times he did not enter the state parliament.

In 2010, Petry ran as a district administrator for the Birkenfeld district . He received 11.8% of the vote and did not make it into the runoff election.

In 2014 Petry announced his application for the office of Lord Mayor in Idar-Oberstein . There he was defeated by his competitors and also did not make it into the runoff election. He received 24.8% of the vote.
