Thomas Sébillet

Thomas Sébillet (* 1512 ; † 1589 ) was a French poet, poet and Romanist .

life and work

Sébillet (or Sebillet) was a student and friend of Clément Marot . He is best known for his poetry from 1548, which gave an impetus to the program of the Pléiade formulated Défense et illustration de la langue française of Joachim du Bellay (1549). Du Bellay disliked the detailed treatment of the (outdated) Marot poem forms. On the other hand, Sébillet's emphasis on poetic inspiration (on the basis of craftsmanship) was trend-setting and his poetic conception was generally similar to that of Du Bellay.

Linguistics owes Sébillet important observations about the linguistic reality of his time.
