Life

Origin and family environment

Ralph Stonor descends in the female line from the Anglo-Norman family Camoys, who was appointed to the royal council with Thomas de Camoys on August 20, 1383 by a writ of summons and who thus rose to hereditary Baron Camoys. This hereditary barony, a barony by writ , fell in Abeyance with the death of his son in 1426because he had no sons, only daughters, who in principle were entitled to inherit in pairs established by writ of summons, but inherited in full. Because a title could not be divided, however, such a title was suspended (was abeyant) either until all the joint portions of the inheritance were united in one hand or until the crown awarded the title to one of the heirs on request. In the case of the Barony Camoys, this did not happen until 1839 in favor of the petitioner Thomas Stonor (1797-1881), who thus became 3rd Baron Camoys. The title is still in his family today.
