Thomas Welz
Thomas Welz (born January 2, 1957 in Bad Berka ) was active in the GDR opposition movement.
Life
Thomas Welz, b. Berndt was born in Bad Berka in 1957 and grew up in Berlin-Altglienicke .
In the DDR
During his military service in the NVA , Thomas Welz was imprisoned for several months in the GDR military prison in Schwedt (Oder) in October 1978 .
As head of the "Information Working Group", he was together with Rainer Eppelmann the editor and author of several illegal samizdat publications by the Peace Circle of the Samaritan Community in Berlin-Friedrichshain , which became the mouthpiece of the GDR civil rights movement , including "Schalom", "Wegzehrung" and "Wendezeit" , one of the first publications in which the term "Wende" was used. Welz has handed over documents from the Peace Circle of the Samaritan Church together with personal documents to the archive of the Federal Foundation for the Processing of the SED Dictatorship, where they are currently being archived. Welz, active in various initiative and ad hoc groups of the opposition and peace movement , co-founded the opposition party Democratic Awakening in 1989 .
After German reunification
After reunification in 1990 , he was first for the SPD , later in the Independent Citizens' Group Friedrichshain (UBF) in the district assembly of Berlin-Friedrichshain . He worked as the managing director and education officer of the “Märkische Arbeiter Bildungs undberatungswerk” in Potsdam , which was dissolved in 1997 for financial reasons. Thomas Welz is also actively involved as a contemporary witness of the reunification in the contemporary witness portal "20 Years of Peaceful Revolution and German Unity". As a member of the "GDR military prison Schwedt" association, he is active in remembering and coming to terms with the history of the GDR military prison in Schwedt . He lives in Berlin .
