The Thomaskirche is a Protestant church in the Mannheim district of Neuostheim . It was built between 1949 and 1950 according to plans by Christian Schrade .

history

The Neuostheim district emerged south of the Neckar at the beginning of the 20th century on the Feudenheim district. The Eastern Parish of the Christ Church in the Eastern City was responsible for the Protestant residents . In 1929 a parish hall was built in Neuostheim, where services were also held, and in 1934 a separate vicariate was set up. In April 1945 the US Army blew up the parish hall because it disrupted the approach path to the neighboring airfield .

A single-family house was rented as an emergency church in October 1945 and three years later the vicariate in Neuostheim was converted into an independent parish. In 1949, construction of the St. Thomas Church began on the foundations of the old parish hall. It was inaugurated on May 29, 1950 by Julius Bender , regional bishop of the Evangelical Church in Baden . A water pipe burst in late 2009 caused major damage to the structure, making the church unusable.

description

inner space

The Thomaskirche was built in the south of Neuostheim on Seckenheimer Landstrasse. It was only the second new building of the Protestant church in Mannheim after the Second World War and was still built in the traditional style. It was designed by the architect Christian Schrade , who was responsible for the Christ Church even before the First World War . The Thomaskirche is a simple hall church with a gable roof . The outer walls are brightly plastered. At the front there is a window in the form of a Luther rose . On the north side there is a roof turret with a bell chair .

The originally planned bell tower was never realized. The bells , which had already been procured in 1965, had been stored and were finally sold to the Seckenheimer Erlöserkirche in 2006. In 2001 the church received an Italian-style tower organ from Orgelbau Stützle ( Waldkirch ), which was placed to the right of the altar. The previous Steinmeyer organ on the gallery has been shut down.
