The Thomasteich is a lake near Mühlhausen in Thuringia .

The lake is about a kilometer southwest of Mühlhausen, south of the swan pond on the Thomaswiese. In the south is the Hofgut Weidensee. The Felchtaer Bach, which flows into the Unstrut, rises from the Thomasteich .

The Thomasteich was dug in the headwaters of a stream in 1607. When the Thomas spring was built on a small hill northeast of the pond in 1901 , it was reinforced with karst water . That is why you can spot pine fronds in the lake today . The Thomasteich was designated as a natural monument and is the property of the Mühlhausen Anglers' Association. The Unstrut-Werra cycle path leads from Mühlhausen directly past the pond.
Flora and fauna
The western banks of the pond are bordered by a continuous reed zone . This area must not be entered during the growing season and the breeding season. The Thomasteich is important as a breeding and feeding habitat for numerous water bird species. It also serves as spawning water for a large population of common toad . However, the wintering area is predominantly the Mühlhausen city forest . The following types of fish have been identified: carp , tench , crucian carp , bream , gable , grass carp , marble carp , silver carp , pike , perch , eel and various types of white fish .
