The marble carp ( Hypophthalmichthys nobilis ) is a gregarious open-water fish from the Xenocyprididae family that was introduced to Europe from Asia with grass carp and silver carp in the 1960s .

distribution and habitat

The marble carp originally comes from rivers and associated standing waters in southern China . However, it was released in many places outside of its original range, in Asia and, in the 1960s, also in Europe .

features

It is very similar to the silver carp , but can be distinguished from it by the keeled belly line between the pelvic and anal fin, the slightly darker color, its even deeper eyes and the higher number of fin rays in the dorsal fin (13 instead of 10). In its home country it can reach lengths of up to two meters in exceptional cases, in Central Europe up to one and a half meters at around 50 kg.

Way of life

The marble carp, like the silver carp and the grass carp, was introduced to control aquatic plants , often under the collective term "East Asian herbivores". It was soon discovered, however, that the marble carp is not suitable for this purpose, as it feeds mainly on zooplankton , which it filters from the open water.

The fish are mostly in small schools, there is no natural reproduction in Central Europe.
