River course
The Thomsen River has its origin in a 270 m high nameless lake in the central east of the Banksinsel, about 20 km from the east coast. The Thomsen River flows in a predominantly northerly direction. There is a lake area on the upper reaches. The Thomsen River has three major tributaries: the mouth of the Dissection River is at river 130, that of the White Sand River at 110 (both from right) and that of the Muskox River (from left) at 40. The Thomsen River finally flows into the 14 km long and up to 6 km wide Castel Bay on the north coast of Banks Island, which opens north to McClure Strait . The catchment area covers an estimated 10,800 km². In the winter months the river is frozen. The Thomsen River can be canoeed in summer.
Toponym
Vilhjálmur Stefánsson named the river after Karl Thompsen, a member of his Canadian Arctic Expedition , who starved to death on Banks Island in 1916.
fauna
The Banks Island Migratory Bird Sanctuary No. 2 covers the lower 73 kilometers of the Thomsen River including the estuary. The bird sanctuary is now part of the Aulavik National Park . The lower 185 kilometers of the Thomsen River lie within the national park. It is estimated that 25,000 birds of the little snow goose ( Anser caerulescens caerulescens ) can be found in the lower reaches and in the mouth of the Thomsen River during the summer months. These do not use the area for breeding, but for changing plumage .
In the Thomsen River six types of fish: lake trout , Arctic char , Coregonus sardinella (least cisco), American vendace , nine-spined stickleback and fourhorn sculpin . The American Arctic char can only be found in fresh water, while the other five species also spend a part of their life in salt water.
